When I originally wrote this short story in
1997, I felt it drawing me into a much larger American story, which I am now
trying to complete. Demi's story, only the beginning of which is told in
"Fall" (formerly entitled "Demi, October 29, 1929") takes
place fairly late, in a timeline which extends from the pre-colonial era to the
present and follows the successive occupants of a mythical stretch of fertile,
bottom land somewhere northwest of Philadelphia. The full Demi story was
originally slated to comprise about 15-20% of the finished novel. What had been
intended to comprise the first 20% of the novel, is now undergoing intensive
revision and looks like it will become a short novel (no problems with ego
strength here!)It is told from the point of view of a native American chief,
Winghocking, aboriginal occupant of that land and eventually disposessed of it
by forces greater than his primitive gods and weapons could muster.
There is no "message" in "Fall," just the feelings of a
little boy trying to come to grips with a cruel maelstrom that swirls about
him.
I hope you enjoy the reading and I welcome any comments you care to make.
