I was deeply mooved by this story - just happened to pick up a friend's copy of Potomac Review. What a pleasant surprise! What I find most interesting is how compellingly subtle it is. Only half of the drama is on the surface: a small boy facing his father's death and perceiving, for the first time, the cold finality of death. The remaining dramas - the father's relationship with Jenny & its consequences, the impending financial doom, the mother's cold attitude towards Demi and the insidious appearance of the navy captain (he's got to be more than just a family friend?) - are effectively presented almost entirely by intimation. This requires a close reading - I've read this three times now - but adds a tremendous richness to the reading experience.Best short story I've read in a coon's age. Bravo!
PS - Looked at the prologue to the novel. Can't wait to see the final production. Added my email to your mailing list.
