I guess I'm not ready to spill the beans quite yet. I think both of you guys have been on the mark with your comments. I can assure you that there's nothing in the story that isn't there for a reason. Almost everything in the writing involves intimation, some of it too subtle for anyone to identify without reading the surrounding context of the larger story, the novel. I also think this is a fair way to write a story. Even if only a portion of the hints make it into the reader's subconscious, that's enough. I would like to think that the first reading conveys the sense of abandonment and loss and fear that Demi experiences yet that subsequent readings can add more to the reader's perception of these.
